Biography

William was born in 1901 in Muscatine, Iowa where he spent most of his life to parents, Irish born Michael Callahan (1853-1919), and Iowa born Elizabeth (Boland) Callahan (1858-1932)^[1].

He was the youngest sibling of 5: Mary Ann"Mayme" Callahan (1880–1953), John Callahan (1881–1961), Lillian Margaret Callahan (1889–1969), Jennie Callahan (1891–1918), and Leo J Calahan (1901–1927).

William worked as a news reporter with the pen name 'Scoop' Callahan from 1917-1921 when he worked for the newspapers Times Tribune in Waterloo, Iowa, and the Quincy Journal in Quincy, Illinois^[2]. Laura Freund Kovner, sister-in-law, to Irma Olive (Alterkruse) Callahan (1912-1992), William's second wife, loved to tell about how William was such a busy newspaperman when he was a young man, he earned the moniker "Scoop".

On 12 Dec 1921 in Louisa, Iowa, USA, William married Georgia Miller^[3][4].

By 1930 William was working for is brother John's electrical appliance store in Muscatine, Iowa, USA ^[5].
