Biography

Joseph Wilson Callahan was born on 2 Nov 1901;[1] he was the son of William Thomas Callahan and Nancy Augusta Speed.[2]

In 1910,[2] Joseph Callahan was living in Cottondale, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in the household of his father, William T. Callahan, with his mother, Nancy Callahan, and his 12 Callahan siblings.

In 1920,[3] Joseph Calleyhan [sic] (age 18, born Alabama) was living in Cottondale, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in the household of his father, William Calleyhan [sic] (age 67, born Alabama), with his mother, Nancy Calleyhan [sic] (age 53, born Alabama), with the following Calleyhan [sic] siblings, all born in Alabama & all single (age, sex): i) Albert (22, M), ii) Elias (20, M), iii) Artemas (15, M), iv) Mary (13, F), v) Clara (13, F). William's occupation was a farmer. Joseph was employed at an iron foundry, as were his brothers: Albert & Elias.

On 06 Dec 1925 in Madison, Alabama,[4] Joseph Wilson Callahan (age 23) married Mary Josephine Lyle (age 18).

In 1930,[5] Joseph W. Callahan, Sr. (age 28, born Alabama) was living in Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama with his wife, Mary J. Callahan (age 23), and 2 sons: Joseph Wilson Callahan, Jr. (age 3) and William E. Callahan (age 1). Joseph, Sr. was born in Alabama as were both his parents. Mary was born in Alabama, but both her parents were from Tennessee. Joseph, Sr. was employed as a machinist in an ore mine.

In Aug 1936 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama,[6] Joseph Wilson Callahan and his family attended the Callahan Family Reunion, and were included in the group photograph of the extended Callahan Family.

In 1940,[7] Joseph W. Callahan, Sr. (age 38, born Alabama) was living in Sheffield, Colbert County, Alabama with his wife, Mary J. Callahan (age 33), and his 2 sons: Joseph, Jr. (age 13) and William (age 11). In 1935,[7] Joseph, Sr. had been living in a rural part of Morgan County, Alabama, but his wife & children were living in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. Joseph, Sr. was employed as a machinist working for the T. V. A. (presumably the Tennessee Valley Authority). Mary J. Callahan was employed as a clerk in a department store.

On 14 Feb 1942 in Sheffield, Colbert County, Alabama,[8] Joseph Wilson Callahan registered for the World War II draft. At that time, he was living at 709 Atlanta Avenue, Sheffiled, Colbert County, Alabama. He was 40 years old, and he was born on 2 Nov 1901 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His contact person was his wife, Mary J. Callahan, who lived at the same address as him. He was employed by the T.V.A. (Tennessee Valley Authority), and he worked at the Wilson Dam in Colbert County, Alabama.

In 1950,[9] Joseph Callahan, Sr. (age 47, born Alabama) was living at 510 1/2 Annapolis Avenue, Sheffield, Colbert County, Alabama as head of household with his wife, Mary Callahan (age 42, born Alabama), with their son, William E. Callahan (age 21, born Alabama), and his father-in-law, Edward E. Lyle (age 83, born Alabama). Joseph's occupation was a machinist at a chemical plant. William's ocupation was a minister at a church.

Joseph Wilson Callahan died on 30 Sep 1997, and he was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield, Colbert County, Alabama. [1] [10] On 2 Oct 1997, his obituary was published in The Times Daily in Florence, Alabama.[11]
