Joseph was born about 1886 in Ardmore, Pickens, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, the son of Felix Callahan and Americalee Taylor.
On 16 March 1904, F. G. Callahan was appointed guardian of his children; Joseph M. Callahan, Daisy Dean Callahan, Dienie Day Callahan and Felix G. Callahan Jr. [2][3]
Joseph M. Callahan married Lizzie Puryear on 16 May 1905 in the Southern District, Indian Territory, United States.[4][5][6]

The death of Joseph has not been sourced. According to the United States Census, 1910, Lizzie Callahan was widowed. Other unsourced biography has his death in 1964.
