Mary Catherine Callahan was born in Feb 1840.[1] She was the daughter of Elias Callahan and Sallie Stockman.[2]
In 1850,[2] Mary C. Callahan (age 10, born Alabama) was living in Bibb County, Alabama in the household of her father, Elias Callahan (age 32, born Alabama), with her mother, Sally Callahan (age 31, born Alabama), and her siblings.
On 1 Feb 1860 in Bibb County, Alabama,[3] [4] Mary Catherine Callahan married Myrick Nolan. The marriage license explicitly stated that she was the daughter of Elias Callahan. She had a daughter, Fannie Nolan, by Myrick about 1861; Myrick died the following year (1862).
On 16 Jul 1860,[5] Mary Nolen (age 21, born Alabama) was living on the West Side of the Cahaba River, Bibb County, Alabama in the household of her husband, Myrick Nolen (age 22, born Alabama). Myrick's occupation was a horse tamer. Mary and Myrick were enumerated on the same census sheet as Mary's father, Elias Callahan and his family.[5] Hence, they were living near, if not next to, her family.
On 14 Jan 1866 in Bibb County, Alabama,[6] Mary Catherine (Callahan) Nolen married Samuel Edmonds. This was the second marriage for both Mary Catherine and Samuel.
In 1870,[7] Mary Edmonds (age 27, born Alabama) was living in Kingdom, Bibb County, Alabama in the household of her husband, Samuel Edmonds (age 50, born Georgia), with his Edmonds children (from Samuel 1st marriage), born Alabama (age, sex): i) Martin (18, M), ii) John (16, M), iii) Earlie (14, M), iv) Parker (11, M); in addition, Mary's daughter from her 1st marriage: Fannie (Nolen) Edmonds (age 9, born Alabama; and in addition Mary & Samuel's son: Willie Edmonds (age 2, born Alabama). Samuel's occupation was a farmer.
In 1880,[8] Mary Edmonds (age 40, born Alabama) was living in Bibb County, Alabama in the household of her husband, Samuel Edmonds (age 56, born Georgia), with her 5 children, all born in Alabama (age, sex): i) Fannie Nolen (19, F), ii) Willie (11, M), iii) Elizabeth (8, F), iv) Sarah (6, F), v) Samuel J. (4, M). Samuel Edmonds' occupation was a farmer; Mary was keeping house. Samuel's parents were both from Georgia.
In 1900,[1] Mary Edmonds (age 60, born Alabama) was living in Kingdom, Bibb County, Alabama in the household of her husband, Samuel Edmonds (age 76, born Georgia). They were the only 2 people in their household; they had been married for 34 years, and they had had 6 children, 4 of whom were still living. Samuel's occupation was a farmer.
In 1910,[9] Mary Edmonds (age "63", born Alabama, widowed) was living in Bibb County, Alabama in the household of her son, Sam J. Edmonds (age 34, born Alabama), with her daughter-in-law, Sallie Edmonds (age 34, born Alabama), and her Edmonds grandchildren, all born in Alabama (age, sex): i) Eugene (13, M), ii) Wheeler (7, M), iii) Robert (2, M). Sam's occupation was a miner in a coal mine.
Mary Catherine (Callahan) Edmonds died in 1920 in Bibb County, Alabama and was a widow at the time of her death. She was buried in the Mount Carmel Cemetery, West Blocton, Bibb County, Alabama, USA. [10] There is an obituary for her provided in the Find A Grave profile. [11]
In the 1880 census[8] that records Mary Catherine & Samuel Edmonds and their 5 children (family #274), the next family entry (#275) is for a "Sarah Callahan", who is the only person in family #275. Sarah Callahan was a white female, age 64, widowed, and her occupation was "keeping house". She was born in Alabama, as were her parents. This is possibly Mary Catherine's mother, "Sallie Callahan". Sallie's husband (and Mary's father), Elias Callahan was living in 1880 in the household of his son-in-law, George Tillery. This record for Elias lists him also as "Widowed/Divorce". It is speculation that Elias and Sallie had essentially separated circa 1880, but weren't actually divorced and for official purposes (like census records) stated that they widowed. [12]
