Harriet Fordyce Callender was born on 25 May 1788 at London England.[1] She was the eldest daughter of Kenneth and Harriet Callender surgeon Kenneth Callander, youngest son of Callender of Craigforth, and Harriet Bradford.
Harriet Fordyce Callender married William Menzies on 10 Aug 1811 in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[2][3][4] They had four children during their marriage;
Harriet Fordyce Callender Menzies died on 19 Apr 1866 at Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland, while on her way to Bridge of Allan.[6][7][8] There is an interesting quote from the Dundee Courier and Daily Argus with an Obituary for Harriet event date 23 Apr 1866, probably date of Obituary rather than death. Family Search and Find my Past noted.[9]

'Years ago while trawling the internet I came upon a reference to Oregon University and a Carte de Visite collection in which were the two photographs just downloaded. Eventually I was able to obtain copies of the two photographs which were not quite what I had expected. On the reverse of William's photo is hand written " Mrs Simpson's dear Father William Menzies HEICBI" and on the back of Harriet's " Mrs Simpson's dear Mother, Harriet Fordyce Callander of Craigforth and Ardkinglas"
William's photo is marked with the name Croal 80 George Street, Edinburgh and the internet finds John Templeton Coal, professional photographer with a studio at 80 George St, from 1863 to 1866. There is a note that he exhibited a frame of 12 carte de visite in the 8th PSS Exhibition in Feb. 1864. Harriet's photo is stamped Ross and Pringle photographers to the Queen, 114 George St Edinburgh which was owned by William at some time. They were at 114 from 1867 to 1875 and at 103 Princes Street, 1876 to 1883 Mrs Simpson was William's daughter Emily. But it is not clear who wrote the comments or where or when, or ofcourse how they ended up in Oregan University. Facinating. Geoff West'

"From the wife (Maria Menzies) of the younger Robert Menzies (cousin to Wm Menzies), to the daughter of John Menzies of Liverpool (Catherine Menzies now Mrs Samuel Holland: WikiTree profile Menzies-1011). Genealogy of William Menzies – The grandfather on his father’s side was William Menzies, Solicitor of Customs at Edinburgh and cousin to John Menzies late of Rodney Street, Liverpool and father of Mrs Samuel Holland.
His father is Captain William Menzies H.E.I.Coy service presently residing in 114 George Street, Edinburgh who is the youngest and now the only surviving son of the said late W. Menzies Solicitor of his Majesty’s Customs in Scotland, who was one of the Bolfrack’s family in the Highlands now extinct owing to the property being sold for the benefit of Bolfrack’s three daughters who are now all dead. His (W. Menzies’) grandmother on the father’s side was Miss Elizabeth Midcalf (also spelt Medcalf in documents) daughter of Dr Midcalf London, she was born in London.
All now left of the old stock of the Menzies family in Scotland is Miss Janet Menzies.
Captain William Menzies and his cousin the Honourable Mr Justice Menzies Cape of Good Hope who is married to Admiral Christian’s daughter. Judge Menzies was the only son of the late John Menzies, eldest brother of the present Capt. W. Menzies. Capt. Wm Menzies H.E.I.S. has one daughter and three sons; Emily Menzies, William Menzies, Kenneth Menzies, and John Edward Menzies. William Menzies’ mother was a Miss Harriet Callender eldest daughter of Kenneth Callender surgeon, youngest son of Callender of Craigforth, and she was sister to Lady Hardinge, wife of Sir Charles Hardinge.
Harriet Fordyce Callander is quoted in various sources as first daughter of Kenneth Callander of Craigforth, but my earlier attempts 20 years ago to traced her birth, failed, although she is well recorded as the wife of Capt William Menzies. But reference now traced on a Family Search as 1786 - 1866. is a firm reference. The early deaths of two siblings was also never traced before now.
