George was born on August 30, 1824 to Robert and Lucy (Weston) Callis in Mathews County, Virginia, United States.[1] He grew up in Mathews County and in the 1850 and 1860 census he is listed as living with his brother, John J Callis.[2][3] It seems his mother had already passed away at this time because his father was living with his other brother, William H Callis, during these two census records.
During his life he held many professions, a canoe and house builder, a farmer and also an oysterman. He built a house and store in Redart, Mathews County, Virginia which his family lived in and used.[1]
