Biography

George was born on August 30, 1824 to Robert and Lucy (Weston) Callis in Mathews County, Virginia, United States.[1] He grew up in Mathews County and in the 1850 and 1860 census he is listed as living with his brother, John J Callis.[2][3] It seems his mother had already passed away at this time because his father was living with his other brother, William H Callis, during these two census records.

He married Mary F Mathews at some point in 1860 which is deduced because in the 1900 census they are listed as being married for 40 years.[4] They had eight children; Mattie Ella, Mary Susie, Dora Council,[5] Nannie Bett, Rossa Averill, Robert Harrow,[6] Lola Inez,[4] and Amanda N.[1] In the 1870 census there is a 7 year old James Callis in the household, but I don't know if he is actually a son or not.

During his life he held many professions, a canoe and house builder, a farmer and also an oysterman. He built a house and store in Redart, Mathews County, Virginia which his family lived in and used.[1]

Here are freespace pages to his purchase receipts:

George died on January 7, 1907 in Mathews County. He is buried on the old home lot in Stutts Creek, Redart, Mathews County, Virginia.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
