Lydia was born in about 1887 in Littletown, Durham, England. She was the daughter of John Calvert and Eliza (Silcox) Calvert.^[1] Lydia's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1887 in the Sunderland district.^[2]

In the 1901 census Lydia (age about 14) was living in Thornley, Thornley, Durham, England.^[1]
