William was the son of Sophia Schmidt and Frederick Calvi.
His parents left Germany and settled in London. Frederick Calvi worked as a tailor in the parish of St Anne, Soho.
William was one of 6 children and brother to Charles, Augusta, Louise, Rose, and Frederick. In January 1874, William and his parents along with Rosa and Frederick were admitted to a workhouse. Sophia died some months later and the children discharged to Battersea School in November.
William later joined the police force and was posted as a constable. On October 13 1890 he was admitted to the workhouse after referral by the police doctor on grounds of violent behaviour and later removed to Hanwell on October 18.
He married in 1896 to Louisa Mary Parncutt and their son William Charles was born the following year. In 1905 William was once again admitted to the workhouse and later removed to Hanwell where he died in April 1907 age 42.
William's sister Rosa died in 1898, age 34 - Camberwell - England Death Index-vol 1d page 497, brother Frederick in 1897, age 30, at Hampshire - England Death Index-vol 2b page 341
