John Cameron was born about 1840 in Glasgow, Scotland and was the fourth son of Hugh Cameron of Glasgow, Scotland [1].
He left Scotland at the age of 14 years and went to the Crimean War (Oct 1853-Feb 1856) on a merchant ship. He later served in the Indian mutiny (1857-1858) and subsequently in the Maori War [2]. When the mutiny broke out he left the navy and joined up with the Naval Brigade, and saw active service in various parts of Bengal. Later he came out to Australia and having a brother in Taranaki decided to ship to New Plymouth where he arrived in 1861. The Maori War broke out and he offered his services to the government which detailed him to harbour duties landing stores at New Plymouth. He also assisted in taking over to Nelson the women and children from New Plymouth. In 1871 he received the appointment at Waitara of harbour master and pilot, also customs officer.
John marries Emily Ward in 1863 at Fulford Street, New Plymouth, New Zealand [3].
He passed away in 1924 aged 84 years and is buried with his wife in Waitara Cemetery, New Plymouth, New Zealand. Last known address Domett Street, Waitara and was a retired Harbour Master [4].
John Cameron's will appoints his son Alexander Cameron, Bank Officer of Taumaranui and son-in-law Arthur Wilding Ogle, retired shipowner [5]. His find a grave profile [6].
