Biography

Ciro Camerota is born around 1868-9 in Atena Lucana, in Salerno province, in the Campania region of Italy.

Ciro marries at least twice, first to Maria Pepe. They have eight known children: Teresina (c. 1895), John B. (c. 1898), Lewis J. (c. 1900), Rosie (1902), Nicola/Nicholas (1904), Antonio/Anthony W./Tony (c. 1906), Frances, 11 (b. 1908), William/J. Blaise (c. 1910)

Ciro Camerota, age 27 (b. 1869), a peasant born in Italy, arrives 20 February 1896 in New York, NY, aboard the Werra. His destination is Springfield.[1]

His wife and oldest child join him almost two years later. Based on her reported age at immigration, Teresa was conceived around April 1896, two months after her father left. Her age at marriage puts her birth year in 1895.

On the manifest of the SS Werra departing Naples on 17 December 1897 and arriving in New York on 30 December, in lines 25-27 are Maria Pepe, 22 (b. 1875), married; her daughter Teresa Camerota, eleven months (b. Jan 1897); and Pasquale Puppolo, 29 (b. 1868), who is married. They last resided in the same town, Atena Lucana, and are bound for Springfield. They are all joining Maria’s husband, Ciro Camerota, in Springfield, MA.[2]

John B. is born around 1898, based on his age in the 1920 census.

Lewis J. is born around 1900, based on his age in the 1920 census.

Rosie is born 30 June 1902 in Springfield. [3]

Nicola is born 6 May 1904 in Springfield.[4] Nicola is known as Nicholas.[5]

Antonio/Tony is born around 1906 based on his appearance in the 1920 census.

Frances is born around 1908, based on her appearance in the 1920 census.

William is born around 1909, based on his appearance in the 1920 census. He is a close match for J. Blaise, born around 1910, based on his appearance in the 1940 census.

Maria dies at home at age 32 on 7 November 1910 in Springfield, MA. The cause of death is lobar pneumonia with a contributory cause of premature labor on October 31. Their address is 68 William St., Springfield, MA. Ciro is the informant on her death record.[6]

Teresina is 16 (b. 1895) when she marries Philip Bongiorno, age 22 on 30 November 1911 in Springfield, MA. Both were born in Italy. It is the first marriage for them both. Teresina lives at 10 Whitney Pl.[7]

Ciro evidently remarries to Teresa Samsalona, who was also born in Italy. Their marriage record has not yet been found. Their first child is born at the same address where Ciro's oldest daughter lives when she marries in 1911.

Ciro and Teresa have at least one child, Angelo (1912).

Angelo is born 9 June 1912 at 10 Whitney Pl., Springfield.[8]

In the 1920 federal census, of Springfield, MA, taken 3 January, James L. Camarota, 52 (b. 1867), heads a household at 369 Water St. with his wife, Theresa, 41 (b. 1876), both born in Italy. The children at home were all born in MA: John B., 21 (b. 1898), Lewis J., 19 (b. 1900), Rose, 17 (b. 1902), Nicholas, 15 (b. 1904), Tony, 13 (b. 1906), Frances, 11 (b. 1908), William, 10 (b. 1909), and Angelo, 7 (b. 1912). James immigrated in 1891 and Theresa in 1906. James is a coke laborer for the gas works, John works as a delivery clerk for a telegraph company, Lewis does press work for an automobile company, and Nicholas is a packer for a book binder.[9]

Rose marries A. Frank Maraforte.

On 9 August 1939, Nicholas marries Lena Helen Macoski.[10][11]

In the 1940 federal census of Springfield, MA, taken 2 April, A. Frank Maraforte heads a household at 60 Adams St. Frank, 47, was born in Calabria, Italy. His wife, M. Rose Maraforte, is 37 and was born in MA. Also living with them are Ciro Camerota, Frank’s father in law, who is 72 (b. 1868) and widowered, born in Salerno, Italy, and J. Blaise Camerota, Frank’s brother-in-law, 30 (b. 1910), single, born in MA. Frank is a gardener with the city park department. No one else in his household is employed.[12]

In 1943, Anthony is among 22 men indicted with Sam Cufari on gaming charges.[13]

Death of Ciro

On 13 November 1956, Ciro Camerota dies at age 88 (b. 1868) in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Rose Marafore, 866 Summer Av.[14]

Nicholas dies on 22 March 1972 in Springfield, MA.[15]He is 68.

That June, Nick is identified by law enforcement officials as an associate of Sam Cufari.

Anthony dies on 17 September 1976 in Springfield.[16]
