John Camm, son of Thomas Camm and Ann Atkinson of Hornsea, was born about 1717-8.
At the age of twenty, Camm was admitted a student of Trinity College, Cambridge. He matriculated in 1738 and received his B.A. in 1741-2. He was ordained a deacon in on 14 March 1741-2 and an Anglican priest on 28 March 1742.

Shortly after receiving his Bachelor's degree Camm emigrated to Virginia and in 1745 he was minister of Newport Parish, Isle of Wight County. On 8 September 1749 he took the oaths as professor of Divinity in William and Mary College. Camm married rather late in life, at the age of 51, on 8 July 1769 Miss Betsy Hansford. They would have three sons and two daughters.[2]
In 1772 despite a somewhat troubled career, Camm was elected President of the College of William and Mary where he served until he was removed in 1777 because of his Loyalist sympathies during the American Revolution.[2] In 1772 he was appointed to the Virginia Governor's Council.[3] He held the rectorship of Yorkhampton Parish, York County, until his death in January or February 1779.
