Biography

Anthony Camp was born 2 Nov 1827 in Wayne Co, OH, the son of Mathias Camp and Sarah Evans.

In 1850 Anthony was living in Chester Twp, Wayne Co, OH, in the household of his parents.[1] In the 1850 census Anthony's occupation is listed as Farmer.

He married Mary Ellen Gardner 23 Oct 1856 in Congress, Wayne Co, OH.[2] Soon after their marriage Anthony and Mary Ellen moved to West Union, Fayette Co, IA, where their two oldest children (Olin Broadwell Camp and William F. Camp) were born. The family was still living in West Union at the time of the 1860 U.S. Census, enumerated 27 June 1860.[3] They moved back to Ohio sometime after this but before 28 Apr 1862 when their third child was born (George Grant Camp, b. in Lafayette (present day Redhaw), Perry Twp, Ashland Co, OH).

Anthony Camp enlisted in the 120th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and later transferred to Company C, Ohio 41st Infantry Regiment on 30 Aug 1862 and (according to his service record) “mustered out” on 25 Nov 1863 at Missionary Ridge, TN.[4]

Anthony died 25 Nov 1863, 19 hours after getting wounded in the Battle of Missionary Ridge on Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, TN. His brother Silas, who was in the same unit, arranged to have the body sent home. Anthony is buried in Redhaw Cemetery, Redhaw, Perry Twp, Ashland Co, OH.[5]
