Biography

Robert Leon Campbell was born in Seminole, Pinellas County, Florida, [1] on 24 September 1914[2] [3] to Francis Leon Campbell and Mary Elsie (Wilcox) Campbell. Like his father, he went by his middle name much of the time, using both Leon Jr while his father was alive and just Leon after his father's death. [4] His mother died in May 1917, leaving Leon and his three sisters for their father and grandmother, Margaret A Campbell, to raise. [5] His father married Emma Futch in 1923. [6][7]

He married Katherine Mae Eve on 1 January 1934 in St Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida.[8][9] They had two children who did not survive infancy.[3]

  1. Infant Daughter Campbell (1935-1935)[10][11]
  2. Robert Leon Campbell (1939-1939)[12][13]

They were enumerated on the 1935 Florida Census as Leon and Catherine Campbell, renting a home outside the city limits of Largo. Leon was a foreman and Catherine was keeping house. Both are listed as being born in Florida and having completed the 12th grade.[14]

By the 1940 Census, they had added daughter Frances J, age 3, to the family and were living in a rented home in Clearwater. Katherine was taking care of the home while R. Leon worked long hours as a Manager in a packing house, possibly for citrus. Leon worked 52 weeks in 1939 to earn $1,820.00; rent on the house was $12/month.[15]

Between 1940 and 1945, the family moved to Avon Park, Highlands County, Florida, where Robert worked as superintendent of a packing house. Another daughter, Carol Eve, had joined the family.[16]

He was only 37 years old when he died on 31 Aug 1951 in Avon Park.[7][3][17] He was buried with their infants in a plot of the Seminole Cemetery, Seminole, Pinellas County, Florida.[3][18]
