Edward R. Campbell was a Private in what was called the 35 Star Flag unit, and helped defend Washington D.C. from the last ditch efforts of Confederate General Jubal Early, July 12-14, 1864. During that battle, President Lincoln was nearly killed by Confederate sharpshooters when he rode up in his buggy to observe.

Battleground National Cemetery in Washington D.C. was the final resting place for 40 Union soldiers from aforementioned battle, about 1/2 mile north of Fort Stevens, where the President was nearly shot .

Edward survived the battle, but years after requested to be buried with his comrades when his time came.

In 1872, Edward married Abbie M. Haywood, and the couple had two daughters, Della and Bertha. Della being born in Vermont, Bertha in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Abbie passed sometime prior to 1910, as records show Edward as a widow from this point.

Fitting with his desire to be laid to rest with his fellow soldiers, he spent his final years living with daughter Della Campbell Goodrich on Elm Avenue in Takoma Park Maryland, a few minutes from the memorial for the battle, as witnessed by censuses of Washington D.C. in 1910, and Takoma Park, Md., in 1930.

Della's spouse, Abbott Goodrich, was also from Vermont.

Edward R. Campbell was promoted from Private to Major, but uncertain of time of that event.

The 40 other men represented units from New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, and Massachusetts, and some of the dead were from Ireland, England, and Canada.
