Margaret Campbell is believed to have been born about 1571 on the Campbell estate of Keithick in Couper-Angus Parish of Perthshire.[1]
Margaret Campbell's parents were Nicholas (Nicol) Campbell of Keithick and his wife Katherine Drummond of Blair [1] Her father died before her first marriage.
Gary Roberts reports that she was known as Margaret Campbell ("Lady Campbell" or "Lady Drummond"), born about 1569/1571. Roberts adds that Lady Margaret Campbell, of Drummond, was the daughter of Nicholas Campbell of Delvany, Dean of Lismore Cathedral and Katherine Drummond, parents unknown. [2]
Margaret was, however, the daughter of Mr. Nicholas Campbell of Delvany who acquired the lands of Kethick (Keithock) from his brother David circa 1576. Nicholas (Nicol) of Kethick in turn was the natural son of Donald Campbell, Abbot of Coupar who, in turn was the fourth son of Archibald, 2nd Earl of Argyll...genealogical charts of the Campbells of Kethick which clearly shows Margaret as the daughter of Kethick...Roberts notes that these charts were prepared by Herbert Campbell, noted genealogist and historian, in the 1920s and that the originals are housed in the Office of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh." [2]
Margaret married first (prenuptial marriage contract was dated 19 July 1589) Andrew Drummond, eldest legal son of William Drummond of Balmaclone. [2]
"On 19 July 1589, her pre-marriage contract was arranged by her brother-german, Patrick Campbell. This contract, in Margaret's interest, was with William Drummond of Balmaclone and his spouse Margaret Rollo (parents of Andrew Drummond of Ardewny), who contracted to give part of Balmacline and the lands of Ardewane (Ardewny), Garvokis, Barsisk, Badhill and Breach(an)mure, in the parish of Cairdny, in the lordship of Madertie, sheriffdom of Perth, to their son Andrew Drummond and his future spouse, Margaret Campbell, with remainder to their male heirs." [1]
"On 28 February 1603, this portion of Balmaclone was granted anew to Andrew Drummond and his wife, Margaret Campbell, increasing their portion to 16 merks (mercats) through the grant of additional Balmaclone lands by King James VI. [3]
Andrew died 24 March 1604.[2]
"Thus, Margaret Campbell acquired with her husband Andrew Drummond a heritable life interest in their parts of Balmaclone lands, with remainder to their male heirs. Her life interest and tenancy, therefore, survived the death of Andrew Drummond on 24 March, 1604. His will was registered and confirmed the following year on 8 March 1605, and made Margaret Campbell, his widow the executrix and intromitter (receive) of his estate. The total moveable assets and debts owed to the estate exceeded L1487. [1]
Lady Margaret Drummond was the widow of Andrew Drummond, Laird of Ballycose." [4]
Margaret married second 25 May 1605 according to the Register of Privy Council of Scotland (Vol. 7, page 600) Alexander Magruder of Innerfeffray and Balmaclone. [2]
"By 25 May 1605, Margaret Campbell had remarried. In a caution bond of that date protecting James, Commendator of Inchaiffray, and others, who were responsible for John Drummond, the eldest son. Margaret Campbell is listed as "relict of Andro Drummond" and "Alexander McGruder, now her spouse." [5]
"Alexander McGruder (the elder), second husband of Margaret Campbell, is cited as chamberlain to James Drummond, Lord Commendator of Inchaffray Abbey, in an instrument of sasine (land transfer) dated 4 April 1603. [6] In the ceremony of giving sasine, possession was transferred before witness of something symbolic such as earth and stone. In this sasine, Alexander McGruder was termed "chamberlain" and acted as the Commendator's procurator or attorney, receiving the land sasine in his behalf. [1]
Alexander Magruder I‘s probable father was John (MacGregor) Magruder, born 1544, in Craignech, Perthshire, Scotland, and probable mother was Margaret Murray, born about 1555 in Pethshire, as well.[2]
Following Alexander Magruder's death, Margaret married a third time to Donald Campbell in Balmaclone (marriage contract dated 1617). No children were born of this marriage. [2]
Alexander McGruder (the elder) died before 1 May 1617. On that date there was an inhibition (injunction) taken by the tutors or guardians of young John Drummond, in his interests, against Margaret Campbell and her third spouse, Donald Campbell. [7]
She died 8 August 1631, [2]
"It appears that Margaret Campbell died after 8 August 1631, when she was about 60 years of age. We have no information as to where she was buried, but nearby was the Inchaffray Chapel of St. John, St. Mary's Church at Innerpeffray, and the Madderty Church." [1]
By this marriage Margaret had two sons John & Thomas Drummond, and daughters Beatrix, Jane, Margaret, & Christina Drummond. [2]
Margaret and Andrew Drummond had six children between 19 July 1589 and 24 March 1604.
By this marriage, Margaret had sons James (1607-pre 1676), Alexander Magruder (1610-1677) who migrated to Calvert Co., Maryland about 1652 where he had much land, John b. 1614, and daughter Margaret. [2]
Margaret and Alexander Magruder had four children between 25 May 1605 and 1 May 1617.
Using the relationship finder below one can identify several possible lines between Margaret and a Magna Carta surety. If Margaret has such a proved line -- and if Alexander Magruder, immigrant to Maryland can be proved to be the same as Alexander McGruder, born in Scotland, then Alexander would be a Gateway Ancestor. But many of the links remain undocumented, posing a valuable research challenge for anyone willing to undertake it!
WikiTree has the following such line (as well as others), which if adequately documented, would indicate such a descent:
