Biography

Lauritta (Campbell) McMahan was born in Tennessee.

Lauritta was born between 1814 and 1823 in Tennessee to parents who were born in the same state (according to the 1900 Census). On that same document, she gave her birth month as June, and it may be inferred that she was born between the 1st and 5th of the month. She was the second wife of Sanders McMahan, marrying around 1841. Together they had the following children: Malcolm/Mark, Sanders, Joseph, James, Elizabeth, Martha, Henderson, Crawford and Jemima. In 1900 she noted that she had given birth to nine children and, of those, five were surviving. She moved to Texas with her son Joe and his wife some time after her husband died in Tennessee.

Lauritta passed away on August 20th, 1900 in McKinney, Collin, Texas, at the home of her son-in-law, Aaron Bryant.^[1]

Research Notes

• Name: Her name is often seen in online trees as Elizabeth Lauritta Campbell; however, I have yet to see a source that reflects the first name "Elizabeth." Does anyone have one they can add here? Until then, please do not add it. Lauritta was spelled various ways throughout her life (e.g. Larithy, Luridia, Laurety, Leurita, Loretta and "Ritty").
