Biography

James Campbell was born on 31 August 1880 at 34 Rankinston Row, Coylton, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Samuel Campbell and Martha Fleming.[1]

He was a mason and was Site Foreman for the construction of the Henderson Church in Kilmarnock, [2] now called the Kay Park Parish Church.[3]

He emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, where he perhaps married Sadie (Sarah) (--?--), and they then went to Glendale, California.[4] They lived in the Los Angeles area for 32 years, where he was a bricklayer in the building trades.[5]

In the 1930 census James and "Sadie L." Campbell were enumerated in Glendale, California at 1234 North Spazier Ave., where they rented their home. James was age 48 born Scotland, married at age 39. He emigrated in 1910, and was a bricklayer for a contractor, but currently unemployed. Sadie was age 48 born Canada, married at age 39. Her parents were born in Canada and Scotland. She emigrated in 1923.[6]

In the 1940 census, James W. Campbell was enumerated with his wife Sarah L., renting the house at 1011 Palm Avenue, West Hollywood, California. He was age 58, had 8 years of education, was born in Scotland, a brick mason for a private contractor. His wife was also 58, born in Canada. They had lived in the same town in 1935. Sarah was the informant.[7]

James W. Campbell died on 12 September 1952 aged 72 years at his residence of 18324 Topham Street, Los Angeles. He was a widower.[5] The informant on his death records was "Sam Campbell." Was this his brother who had emigrated to Canada, or perhaps a nephew?

He was buried with his wife on 15 September in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.[5][4][8]
