Margaret Campbell and Alexander Keir were not married. Mary Campbell's civil registration of her birth, marriage, and death do not list Alexander as her father. The baptismal register of Towie also does not list a father. However, when Margaret was called to the ecclesiastical court in her home parish of Towie on May 2, 1886, she admitted to being guilty of a 'lapse in fornication', and named Alexander Keir, of Strathdon, as the father. DNA matching has corroborated the account given by Margaret Campbell.
