36 ii. James Gray Jr. was born in Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut 25 NOV 1790. Individual flags: 1897 Hist; Obituary. James died 25 JUL 1860 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 69. Tioga County Agitator-Wednesday Aug. 22, 1860 issue: Died in Sullivan township, on the 25th inst., James Gray, aged 69 years. The deceased was one of the oldest settlers in this County having moved into Sullivan as early as 1807, where he continued to reside until the time of his death. He was an honored member of the Baptist church, beloved and respected by all who knew him. He was accidentally killed by falling from a load of hay. He died almost instantly. His body was interred JUL 1860 in Gray Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married three times.

He married Maria Campbell* 11 SEP 1817. Maria was born 15 MAY 1797 in Springfield, Springfield Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Maria died 26 FEB 1820 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 22. Her body was interred FEB 1820 in Gray Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Lorena Doud 05 DEC 1820 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lorena was born 22 NOV 1797 in Hubbardton, Rutland County, Vermont. Lorena was the daughter of Peleg Doud and Isabella Rumsey. Lorena died 20 OCT 1833 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 35. Her body was interred Oct 1833 in Rumsey-Doud Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Martha Unknown (Pinkham) 19 MAY 1844. Martha was born 1806 in Maine. She married Rev. Tobias Pinkham before 1838. Martha died 10 Jul 1877 in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 71.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lorena and James had one male and one female under 5, two females and one male 5-10 in their household.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. James did not have a wife in this census. His household included one female 5-10, one male and one female 10-15, one male and one female 15-20. Apparently the older children were old enough to help care for the younger.

In the Census of 1850, James was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. James was a farmer with property worth $2000. Twelve year old Joseph Kendall was also in the household. I do not know his relationship at this time. 1897 Tioga County History page 1085 - James, second son of James and Parthenia, was born in Sharon, Connecticut November 25, 1790 and removed with his parents to Otsego County, New York in childhood. When he was fifteen years old, the family located in Sullivan Township, and his subsequent life was passed in Gray's Valley. He was a Whig until 1828, when he supported Andrew Jackson for the presidency and remained a Democrat until 1856. In that year he became a Republican, and voted that ticket until his death. For nearly twenty five years he served as justice of the peace, and was a postmaster at Gray's Valley for a long period. Mr. GRAY and family were members of the Baptist Church, in which he filled the offices of clerk and deacon for many years.
