Biography

Jesse was born about 1814. He is the son of H Campbell. Levi (wife Louisa) & children are listed in the 1850 census of Laurens Co., SC. In 1860, 1870, & 1880 Levi (wife Eliza) & children are living with Jesse in Spartanburg. The 1880 census also includes Jesse's sister Linny Rook.

Levi & Eliza's daughter Mary T.B. Campbell md. Thomas Austin Sizemore in 1882. In 1885 Jesse sells some property to Mary T.B and & her brothers: Spartanburg Conveyance Books Bk.WW p.411 - Jesse CAMPBELL to O. W. CAMPBELL et al. $10.00 pd. by O. W. CAMPBELL, Robert E. Lee CAMPBELL, MARY T. B. SIZEMORE, James Ellis CAMPBELL, for love & affection, 185 1/2A brd. by Patrick CALDWELLS estate, James L. HILL, widow BOMAR & others, where I now reside. Also 1 lot in city of Spartanburg, 2 1/2A brd. by lots of F. M. TRIMMIER, Charlie THOMPSON, A. J. GWYNN & others. Another lot in city, 1/2A brd. by F. M. TRIMMIER, A. HOLTZHOUSER & others. Wit: Geo. W. NICHOLES and John LEVIET (SEVIET?) - 17th Jan. 1885

In 1889 Mary T. B. sells some of it: Bk.EEE pg.796 - Mary T. B. SIZEMORE of GREENVILLE to A.G. FLOYD land about 4 mi. from city, by Patrick CALDWELL, Estate of Jas. HILL, widow BOMAR & others. Same land conveyed by Jesse CAMPBELL to her & others. Wit: A. C. RUDISAIT and J. F. JEFFERYS. 6th Feb. 1889 rec. 1892.

Book y, page 125: Deed of Conveyance: 20 Jan. 1843: Jesse Campbell (AKA) Jesse Couch To Z. D. Bragg, for ?? sold 121 acres. bounded by: S - Enoree River, W/E - Couch's Land, N - Archibold Lynch, and E - James Couch. Wit: Davis Newman and Jesse Couch.

NOTE: The Ephraim Campbell mentioned above was a brother to Jesse Campbell and a son of William Campbell and we know William Campbell and Benjamin Couch had land next to each other and these two families were tied together in many ways. This deed is obviously tied to many people that were of my family or at least neighbors. What is really a mystery is why Jesse Campbell (son of William was "AKA" also as Jesse Couch - This is Exactly the way it was written in the deed. Note the deed listed below recorded only a few weeks after the above deed, was the Jesse Couch referred to the same person referred to as AKA Jesse Campbell. These families have been giving me headache for years.

A later deed that involves many of the same people is given below.

Joy, you listed in your post the location of Levi (1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880) and Jesse (1860, 1870, and 1880) in the census records. Jesse was located in the 1850 Spartanburg District, S.C. Call Number S.C. M432, Roll Number 858, page 220, Dwelling 1936, Family 1936, line 24||Jesse Campbell household. As near as I can tell, in the household were his widowed Mother, Mary [Polly] Couch Campbell, his sister Lenora [Linney] Campbell, and Nancy Campbell (b. 1812), who I believe is a sister (not sure of this).

Obviously, because Levi and his family was living in Jesse’s household for so many years suggest a close relationship and the presence of the deed you noted (see below), strongly reinforces this tie, as these were children of Levi and Jesse was basically giving the land to them.
