Biography

Catherine was born in 1725. She passed away in 1797.

Nothing in the biography says her name starts with Margaret.

I ordered and received an 1815 Directory of Landowners in Central Va recently that includes Amherst and Nelson Counties. I note with interest that a Catherine and an Elizabeth Campbell both owned land in Amherst County in the Piney River area in 1815. They were not estate holds either. The George Campbell estate was still held by him in Nelson County although he had been deceased since 1791. Johns first buy out was to Ambrose in 1816 – an indication that Catherine had passed on. Unless there is another Elizabeth Campbell that owned land in Amherst, this could have been George Jr’s wife Elizabeth. The 611 acre farm George Jr owned just south of the village of Piney river was sold to his son just prior to his (George Jr’s) death. How come all this can not be found in the Amherst records. Regards BH

October 1814 she is still alive, as evidenced by the land deed between Cornelius and George Campbell, both sons of George Jr and Elizabeth. The deed mentions the land of Catherine Campbell, and describes it on the Piney River, directly adjacent to Elizabeth Campbell, widow of George Jr.

The Amherst County directory of landwoners, 1815, states: Catherine Campbell, Piney River, 10 miles North of Courthouse. Catherine is shown with 30 acres on Piney River. (1815 Amherst Co Taxes)

The Nelson County directory of landowners, 1815, states: George Campbell ESTATE owns land there.

Caty was named in her husband's will, stated she was to have: the plantaion stock of Cattle, hogs and horses.

In the Amherst County 1810 census we have Ambrose Campbell next to George Ruly and Archibald Alexander.
1 male 16-25 (brother or child of Ambrose? or could this be Fountain with age in error? Do we really know when Fountain was born?)
1 male 45+ Ambrose Campbell (should be only 34 yrs)
1 female under 10 child of Ambrose and Nancy
2 females 10-15 children of Ambrose and Nancy
1 female 16-25 (Lucy?, daughter of George and Caty)
1 female 26-44 ( Nancy Gillaspie)
1 female 45 + ( Caty, widow of George)

Evidence of her death date: Ambrose Campbell sold his 1/13th portion of his fathers plantation. This is dated in July 1815. We can state now that Cathy, the mother of the 13 Campbell kids is now deceased. BH

To substantiate the death date of Caty, widow of George Campbell: Ole George specified in his will that his wife Cathy could have use of his plantation until her death and then it would be divided between “my children”. We can determine the near death date of Cathy as ca August 1816. This is based upon the sale of a 1/13th portion of the 162 acre plantation from son Ambrose to brother John in September 1816.We know from other legal documents that brother Ambrose was in financial straights and needed the money badly.
BH, March 2013

Catherine Campbell, the wife of ole George was left the use of his 162 acre plantatation in Nelson county for as long as she lived which I believe was until 1816 the year son Ambrose sold his 1/13th portion of his fathers estate to brother John. This property is in a different county and would be located about 20 miles from the Amherst county CH and 17 miles from the Nelson CH (BH)

It can pretty well be assured that Cathy , old George’s wife, died in 1816, when son John purchased his first 1/13 portion of the estate from brother James.
