Biography

Heleman was born in 1860 in the Utah Territory. He was the son of Jonathon Campbell Jr. and Lucinda Shipman Austin. In 1880 he married Mary Blanchard Raleigh and together were the parents of nine children. Heleman and Mary had a difficult relationship which was filled with separations and divorces. The family moved around a great deal, Heleman always searching for the perfect farm land. In 1905 he was involved in a water rights dispute in which he was hit over the head with a shovel and he bit off a man’s ear, for which he was convicted of mayhem and sentenced to the Utah State prison. Helleman married Sarah Rebecca Walters in 1903 and together they were parents of one son. After Sarah’s death Helleman married Mary Ormerod in 1914. Heleman passed away in 1926 at age 66.

Notes

Their daughter Eva states Heleman and Mary were married 2 May 1880 and they received marriage endowment from their church at the Salt Lake Temple in 1893. Marriage data sources list the 1893 date. I was unable to find source for the 1880 date except for family statement but it is consistent with their children’s birthdates being from 1881-1897.
