Biography

Campbells, South West Mabou[1]

This family is descended from Samuel Campbell and his wife, Jane MacGregor, who emigrated with their family from Tulloch, Lochaber, Scotland, and after first settling in Pictou County, came to South West Mabou in 1803 (I believe this to be an error in the telling or copying of this story.. 1803 appears to be the date Samuel was in Pictou, 1816 he came to SW Mabou, see land petitions below).

He had a family of 4 sons and 2 daughters; Donald, Malcolm, John, Samuel, Mary and another unnamed daughter.

1816, Campbell, Samuel - Petition to Fitzherbert: Petitioner emigrated from Inverness Shire to Pictou, N.S. In 1803. He purchased land at Pictou, but lost it in law through a bad title. He has eight children. He asks lot 17 on the south-west branch of the Mabou River, formerly occupied by Alexander Beaton and relinquished by him. Note: recommended.[2]

1818, Campbell, Samuel - Petition to Ainslie: Petitioner, age 60, a native of Inverness Shire, has lived eighteen months in Cape Breton, where his wife and family are with him. He purchased a lot in Nova Scotia for which he paid 150, and after he had lived on it twelve years he was dispossessed as it had previously been granted. He asks lot 11 on the east side of the S.E. River Mabou.[3]

1825, Campbell, Ann - Petition to Wallace: Petitioner, a native of Scotland, age 55, is the widow of the late Samuel Campbell. She has six children. She asks a grant of the land located to her husband six years before. The land lies in the rear of lots 17 & 18 on the west side of the S.W. Branch of the Mabou River. Note: approved.[4]

1835, Campbell, Malcolm - Petition to Campbell: Petitioner's father, Samuel Campbell, willed him a lot on the S.E. Branch of Mabou. The grant was made out in the name of his mother, Ann Campbell. She, before her death also assigned the land to petitioner. He asks a grant in his own name. Warrant to Crawley: 200 acres sin the rear of land assigned to Joseph Worth.[5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
