At 23 Daphne Campbell is just a normal person. [2]
An eldest daughter, she left school in her home city of Orange, New South Wales, to take a job there; joined up at 18; but from then on her life has developed in a series of jumps. Service girl to film star - film star to a tucked-away life in the centre of Central Australia - now back in the headlines as "Miss Northern Territory" in the South Australian section of the current "Miss Australia" contest.
When I first called on Mrs. Steve Calder, now Miss Territory Elect, in her Alice Springs home, she was out. The next time she was rushing off to a meeting and as she hurriedly stuffed brown one-year-old Erica into her pram, she asked me to morning tea on the following day.
It was interesting to meet Mary Parsons of "The Overlanders" in person. She was tall and much thinner than in the film; her blue light wool frock and a small blue bow in her hair accentuated the colour of her eyes, smooth fair hair dangled shoulder-length. Her mouth was rather large, but when she smiled you realised that that was where her main attraction lay.
The Calder's house is in the main street of Alice Springs, set back behind a wide lawn, with enough garden space to provide an all time outdoor job. The scent of sweetpeas climbing over the front fence wafted out to meet me when I arrived next morning. I had to ring the bell twice because Daphne was at the back of the house attending to Erica, who had been sick in the night. She hadn't had breakfast. although it was after eleven.
Her husband, Steve Calder, DFC, was away. "It's a good thing," laughed Daphne, "He hates reporters." Known to everyone as Sam, he is one of the two pilots flying for Eddie Connellan's Air Services, headquartered in Alice. . . . more . . . and press photos . . . . . .
. . . . . Tales about The Overlanders run rife in Alice, and Daphne was able to repudiate many of them. . . . . .
