Biography

Matthew was born about 1760. He is the son of Joseph Campbell and Elizabeth Peatross. Named for his grandfather, Matthew Peatross.

Matthew Peatross valued the business acumen of his son-in-law, Joseph, whom he made him one of the executors of his will. Joseph was frequently called upon by the court to assist in appraising estates of deceased members of his community. Amont those also appointed were respected landowners of Caroline County. Joseph appeared in court as the plaintiff in a case of debt against James Dismukes and was awarded 213 pounds in 1774.

1784 Joseph acquired 82 aces from John Hampton, 28 from Mr. HJutcheson and additional land from Thomas Jones.

1787 Joseph was credited in the tax records for 120 acres in St. Mary's Parish and he additionally purchased 420 acres in St. Margaret's Parish from John Hart. He reported 551 1/2 acres in St Margaret's Parish and 120 acres in St. Mary's Parish.

1792 Joseph owned a total of 604 acres in St. Margaret's Parish. His estate was described as being 8 miles sough of the Courthouse (Bowling Green). The 120 acres of Poplar Grove is referred to as the old Campbell Homeplace.

Joseph raised tobacco and was a businessman.

Joseph and Elizabeth had 11 children who lived to adulthood. The children petitioned the court to settle their father's estate. The probable order of birth and the approximate dates of births can be inferred from this document and census records. Elizabeth (married Reuben Mitchell) was the first born(she died young leaving 2 daughter named Elizabeth), Matthew (married Margaret Haley before 1790) was the oldest son and was born by 1764, the others followed: Jane, Amey married in 1786 to Meriday Haley) Jane married Caleb Mitchell), Joseph, Sarah(Sally), William, Ann(Nancy), Zaccheus, Dorthea(Dolly) and Elliott Peatross Campbell. Matthew Campbell became the guardian of four of his brothers and sisters who were under age.

Joseph died suddenly and did not make a will. Matthew was named the administrator of his estate. Dec 9, 1794 his estate was appraised. Mar 9, 1795, John Chiles was appointed guardian of Joseph Campbell's orphans and order to assign Elizabeth her dowry. After she received her dowry, the rest of the estate was to be divided among the children and grandchild and the remaining 2/3 of the land owned was to be sold. The value of land already given to Joseph Jr. Meriday Haley and Caleb Mitchell was to be charged against the estate as well as the value of 2 slaves given to them. Matthew was to be charged with 100 pounds and the value of a negro that his father had already given him.

Elizabeth continued to live on the someplace as she received 244 acre in her dower and they called their Poplor Grove.

Within the next several years, Joseph married Rosey Sale and Sally married Jeremiah Yarbrough. William married in 1812. Zacheus marred Sarah Ann Turner and Dolly married Samuel Alsop.

Elizabeth died before Oct 17, 1802 as Matthew was granted a certificate for obtaining a letter of administration for her estate on that date.

The family appeared in court for settlement of their father's estate while Elliott was under age. Elizabeth Campbelll Mitchell's daughter, Elizabeth, was also under age. Elizabeth acquired an additional 144 acres and left her estate to be divided equally among her children.

By 1819 Matthew owned 637 acres and he also owned a tavern. One of his daughters married a Dickerson. Elizabeth Gray was the executor of his will. in 1820 he shows 2 males living in their home. Matthew died between April 1833 and April 1834 owning 816 acres.
