Donald was born on 27 September 1833 in Kilmonivaig, Inverness-shire. He migrated with his parents 2nd January 1839 aboard the ship "Boyne", as assisted immigrants. He married Ann, daughter of John mcDonald of Thistlebrook on 1 October 1855 in Bombala. They had twelve children.
He died at the family property Marathon, Delegate, on 22 October 1908.
