Neill Campbell was born about 1752. He was possibly the son of Patrick Campbell.[1]
Neill Campbell's possible father, Patrick Campbell, wrote his Last Will & Testament on 17 May 1775. It was proved in July Court 1775 in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Among the bequests was one to his son Neill Campbell of "...two hundred acres of land joining the yonder side of this plantation. one mare and colt and equal share of my hoggs to him and his heirs forever." There were also bequests to his wife Mary Campbell, his son Alexander, his son Duncan, his daughter Mary, his daughter Ann, his daughter Catrin, and his brother Archibald.[1]
Neill Campbell wrote his Last Will & Testament in 1825. It was probated in Cumberland County, North Carolina during the March Term 1825. Notice was posted by his executors, Norman Campbell (his son) and David Gillis on 8 Mar 1825. Bequests were left to:
Neill Campbell passed away before 8 Mar 1825 in Cumberland County, North Carolina.
The estimated year of birth of 1752 comes from the book ‘’Scattered Seed, Genealogical Research Data of Southeastern North Carolina’’ by Myrtle N. Bridges. She does not elaborate on how she made her estimation.[1]
On 12 Nov 1810 a bond was made in Cumberland County, Alabama for the marriage of a Neill Campbell to Sarah Morrison. Bondsman was Finlay Chisholm. Witness was Robinson Mumfor. If the estimated year of birth is 1752 is correct, it would be unlikely for Neill Campbell to have waited until he was fifty-eight years of age to marry for the first time. One of my cousins researching the family, Callie Ratley Stanley, told me before her death that this Neill Campbell was not in our family line and this is somewhat confirmed by the Bridges book.[3][1]
Multiple Neill Campbells appear in the Cumberland County, North Carolina United States Census Records for the years 1790, 1800, 1810, and 1820. With the broad age ranges on each census, it is difficult to narrow down which, if any, is the record for this Neill Campbell.
