NOTES

James Campbell served during the Revolutionary War under Cols. Thornton, Webster, & Tash in Capt. Daniel Runnells' Company for the State of Massachusetts as a Private. According to Dr. Henry Harlow Skinner, his great grandson, he was wounded at the Battle of Stillwater. This is evidenced by a letter written by Dr. Skinner to the Pension Bureau in Washington, D. C. asking for further information on his Revolutionary Veteran Ancestors. The letter was dated 19 Feb 1916.

James was the Registrar of Deeds for Cheshire County for 22 years. His son Lewis followed him in this occupation, continuing for 11 years. His office was in the woodshed at his home in Walpole, which he had bought from Joseph Heaton in 1806. This home was sold by the heirs to Holland Fay in 1826/27.

Originally, James lived in Acworth. According to an article in the Political Observatory (Walpole NH), of Sat. 03 Mar 1804, p. 3, he moved to Walpole solely for the purpose of accommodating the people of the county in his office of County Register. An advertisement in the Farmer's Weekly Museum (Walpole NH), Tues 19 Apr 1803, p. 3, stated that his office was at the South end of Walpole Street at this time.

From Farmer's Cabinet (Amherst NH), Sat. 22 Oct 1825, p.3 :

DIED - In Walpole, James Campbell, Esq., Register of Deeds for the county of Cheshire, aged 64. He was a revolutionary soldier, and a man universally esteemed. He has held the office of Register, by universal consent for about 20 years.
