Biography

Samuel was a Friend (Quaker)

Samuel Canby was born 6 Jun 1745, the son of Benjamin Canby and Sarah Yardley [1] I have not found a document with the births of his parents, as the births for Buckingham MM online begin at 1747, and it was not found in the book of births and burials of Buckingham MM. Samuel was named in the will of his father Benjamin Canby, who died when he was very young. In 1769 Samuel received a certificate of removal from the Falls MM to go to the Fairfax MM in VA.[2] He married his wife Elizabeth the following year.

He married (1) Elizabeth Hough[3]https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/3753/images/quakergenvolvi-006153?ssrc=pt&treeid=14327370&personid=90801465&usePUB=true&usePUBJs=true&pId=347234[4] Per the record in the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy, Elizabeth was the daughter of John Hough and Sarah. Samuel and Elizabeth had two children- Benjamin Hough Canby b. 16 Feb 1771 and John Hough Canby b. 27 Apr 1772.[5]

Samuel married (2) Ann Shene[6][7] As they were married in a Quaker meeting house, she was of the Quaker faith. The marriage record does not have anyone with the last name of Shene who attended the marriage. Her parents apparently died when she was young and she was adopted by Israel Thompson and his wife Ann (Richardson).[8] Israel Thompson was in attendance at the wedding.

Adoption of Ann Shean by Israel Thompson and Ann his wife. Posted 24 Aug 2020 by colonialloudounvalley

In late winter of 1771 at the Fairfax Monthly Meeting in Loudoun County, Virginia, it was reported that Israel Thompson and Ann his wife having under their care a cousin about 11 years of age whom they had brought up from a child her parents being dead, and she likely to continue with them to mature age, they requested that she, “Ann Shein”, might be received as a Member of the Society of Friends. Such a request was deliberated upon and granted. In the fall of 1779 at Fairfax Monthly Meeting it was stated that those appointed to attend the anticipated marriage of Samuel Canby to “Ann Sheine” not being present, were continued to report to the following Meeting. Samuel Canby was at the time a thirty four years old widower with at least two children from his late wife the former Elizabeth Hough, daughter of John Hough and Sarah his wife. Later in the summer of same year Samuel Canby and “Ann Shean” were reported to have appeared before said Meeting to signify their intentions of marriage, which was consummated dated 1 September 1779. Seven members of the Thompson family formally witnesses their betrothal. Shortly beforehand Ann by her hand formally witnessed the then widowed Israel Thompson enter into a marriage contract with Sarah Hague, daughter of Francis Hague and Jane his wife. It being made a part of Israel Thompson’s final papers (Loudoun County Will Book E, pp. 87-9).
It is further noted that Ann's surname was spelled in a variety of ways as above given (Sheine, Shean, Shein). Also, see Shinn. A related possibility is the surname Chinn.

Three children were born to Samuel and Ann- Israel T. Canby, Joseph Canby and Sarah Canby. The births of these children were not recorded by the Fairfax Monthly Meeting. Israel and Joseph were received into membership at the Goose Creek Meeting, 1807/1808.

The minutes of the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting, Loudoun County, Virginia, for May 2, 1816, read that, "Samuel, who many years past, removed from this meeting into a situation in Kentucky, too remote from any settlement of Friends, to be joined to any meeting in that quarter, having stated in a letter addressed to one of our members, that he has again lately removed to and settled in Cincinnati in the State of Ohio and requesting a certificate to the Cincinnati Monthly Meeting. It was considered from the great lapse of time that has occurred since he could have had a part in any transaction here, usual inquiry may be omitted. We hereby certify that he is a member of our Society and as such we recommend him to your religious care and oversight." [9]

Samuel's date of death is given as 1823 Ohio, but I have no source at this time for this fact.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

Thank you for the sources on Samuel's marriages. I have placed the sources on his profile, and also the Quaker record of his marriage to Ann. If I find an image of his marriage to Elizabeth, I will post it. A certificate of removal to a Quaker meeting house would be nice to find.

FamilySearch lists Samuel Canby, born in 1742 in Bucks County as having married Ann Shene (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZXV-NVW) who bore him three children, Israel T, (Canby-150), Joseph, and Sarah. I think this Samuel Canby is the grandfather of Edward Richard Sprigg Canby

Thank you for your comment. I will need to do research on Israel. There is no source for his birthdate or location.

If Samuel married Ann in VA (I don’t have the Quaker wedding info in front of me at present) it would make sense that Israel was born in VA. Maybe there is a Quaker record. I will see what I can find. Thanks.

Robert Green provided a link that traces the Canby family from England. : https://www.pennock.ws/fam/fam03942.html

Unfortunately, the site has no sources for the marriage of Samuel Canby to Ann Shinn or Shene.
