"David,5 David,4 Caleb,3 Samuel,2 Zaccheus,1 (Cande in record of births;) baptized September 22, 1782; died in Oxford ... David's mother died in his infancy. He was then adopted by Timothy Candee, then of Oxford, afterward of Pompey, New York, where he was accompanied by David. After remaining there a year or two, David returned to Milford, Connecicut, where he lived with Woodruff, who kept hotel. He then went south with Mr. Cone, trading. After three years trading, the two bought the Oxford hotel and store in Oxford, Connecticut, and opened store there. Mr. Candee bought out Mr. cone, and continued the business.
Mr. Candee was a respected, leading citizen, a gentlemen of the old school, of sound judgement, of quiet manners, and rather reticent. He accumulated, in a course of steadily succesful business, a fortune which was handsome for the place in which he resided. ...
David succeeded his uncle Daniel as Postmaster, and was succeeded by his son, George N."

"The Oxford Hotel on Oxford Road was built.. 1795 by Daniel and Job Candee. Daniel Candee, who was also Oxford's first postmaster, operated the inn until about 1811. David Candee succeeded him as innkeeper until his death in 1851. Frederick Candee then inherited the inn from his father and ran it for some twelve years.
