Major William Candler Sr. served with Wilkes County Militia, Georgia Militia during the American Revolution.
William Candeler was a captain in the royal militia when the Revolutionary War began having been Commissioned as such April 12, 1773. When war became inevitable he was made major of a Georgia regiment and held that office till the end of 1778, when he made Colonel as a result of a reorganization of the militia regiments. Continued actively in military service till the end of the war. Had a part in nearly every campaign and engagement in Georgia in and the Carolinas. Commanded a small party of Georgians at Kings Mountain. Served under Col. Clarke. was in the siege on Augusta and Blackstocks, was wounded in the battle of Long Cane
