Milton was born in 1837 in Campbellton, Georgia. He is the son of Samuel Candler and Martha Beall.[1][2]
Milton was enumerated for the United States Census, 1850 at The 11th Division, Carroll County, Georgia on April 9th. It is shown in an image of the original along with S C Candler, Martha B, E S and Noble D.[3] On the following page in this same census, but dated April 10th, as seen in an image of the original, are Julia F Candler, Sarah J, Wm B and Ezekiel F (this must be Elizabeth incorrectly enumerated).
He graduated from the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens in 1854. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1856 and began practice in Cassville, Georgia. The following year he moved to Decatur, Georgia.[4]
Milton Candler married Eliza Murphey June 9, 1857, in DeKalb County, Georgia.[5]
The new family was enumerated; including Eliza C, Charles M and Samuel C in the United States Census, 1860 at Decatur District, DeKalb County, Georgia.[6]
After serving in the Georgia State House of Representatives from 1861 through 1863, Candler was a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1865 and the Democratic National Convention in 1872 and 1876. His next elected political office was in the Georgia Senate from 1868 until 1872.[7]
For the United States Census, 1870 and seen in the image of the original, he is listed as a lawyer and also in the house are Eliza Candler, C Murphy Candler, Samuel Candler, Milton A Candler, Laura Candler, Florence Candler, and likely domestics Sarah Sprinkler and Emma Word with her probable children Frederick Word and Martha Word. This was recorded June 18, 1870, at the Decatur Post Office in the Decatur District in DeKalb County, Georgia.[8]
In 1876, Candler was elected to the United States House of Representatives and was re-nominated in 1878. He withdrew his nomination however, thus assuring a Democratic control of the seat. Candler then returned to his law practice in Decatur.[9]
M A Candler was enumerated as self at Decatur M.D. No. 531, DeKalb County, Georgia for the June 9, United States Census, 1880. He was noted as a lawyer, born 1837 in Georgia and married as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are wife Eliza C Candler, son Murphy Candler, son Samuel E Candler, son Milton A Candler, daughter Laura Candler, daughter Florence Candler, son Maury Lee Candler, daughter Claude Candler, daughter Ruth Candler, other Grace Calaway and other Andrew Alice.[10]
For the enumeration of the United States Census, 1900 and seen in the image of the original, he was June 1, 1900, noted as living in Militia District Decatur town, DeKalb County, Georgia, with his wife Eliza and daughters Claude and Ruth.[11]
He died in Decatur in 1909.
His son Charles Murphey Candler died in 1938.[12]
As listed in the Find A Grave Index,[13] Milton Anthony Candler is buried in Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, DeKalb County, Georgia.[14]
