Note NI12Handwritten notes for obituaries of Mrs Jas Cowell ( i.e.Eliza) born 1st July 1820 , died 4th December 1903.
Written by Henry James Cowell. 1
4th December 1903.
The late Mrs Jas (James) Cowell who has just passed away at her sons residence, Fulham , was one of the earlier colonists having arrived here with her husband , the late Mr Jas Cowell in the ship Louisa Baiyley(Baillie?) in Sept 1849.
A short residence in Adelaide was followed by a removal to Clarendon where for some years Mr Cowell conducted a day school for boys and girls.
His wife took the oversight (?) of the girls and by the kindly interest she took in their welfare gained their affection and esteem.
The ordinary style of conveyance at this time was a bullock dray , so that journeys to and from Adelaide were not of frequent occurrence.
After some years spent in Clarendon they removed to Norwood where Mr Cowell successfully conducted a large school for boys and a good many of the successful business men of this State were at one time his pupils.

Another old Colonial has passed away in the person of the late Mrs Jas Cowell Senr , who has just died at her sons residence, Fulham , at the advanced age of 83 years .
She arrived here with her husband , the late Mr Jas Cowell in the ship Louisa Baiyley(Baillie?) in Sept 1849.
After a few months residence in Adelaide was followed by a removal to Clarendon where for some years Mr Cowell conducted a day school.
In this he was assisted by his wife who took a great interest in the young girls who attended the school.
Medical skill at this time was often difficult to obtain, and Mrs Cowell who made a special study of Homeopathy found her services very much in demand and was very successful in dealing with the ailments of the young folks who lived in the neighborhood.
After a while they removed to Norwood where for some years Mr Cowell conducted a large school for boys and Mr and Mrs Cowell are held in affectionate remembrance by many of their old scholars.
The late Mr Jas Cowell died at Norwood in 1879 so that Mrs Cowell survived her husband for 24 years.
She left two sons , Mr H.J. Cowell of Australised (?) Chambers , and Mr J.W.Cowell of Norwood. 1 1

Payneham
May 15th 1879.
My dear James,.
We were very glad to have a few lines from you yesterday. We are also glad that you have spoken to Mrs Fowler about the late work , and if Mr. J does not take any notice I would speak to Mrs.F again, else if you do not, he might think you were wanting to shirk what others do. have given up all thought of going to Belair on 24th, and dear as well as myself would like you to come and dine with us on that day, we have a nice young fowl that Mrs Stanford brought us, I would kill it for the occasion.
You can ride by the morning bus to Payneham, get down at the Post Office, and come across the section in an oblique direction , then in the afternoon if you wish to go up to Henrys you can do so.
To be completed CFC.
