Biography

Robert was born in Frome, Somerset, England on 22 September 1779. He passed away March 15, 1824, in Frome as well. He married Mary Houston (also Houstoun) on July 10, 1804, and operated a fabric shop (he was called a linen draper) on Cheap Street in Frome. This term was used to describe a merchant who draped fabric in the doorways of their shops to entice buyers to enter the shop). This commercial area of quaint shops and restaurants on this pedestrian-only street still operates in modern day Frome, (2018.)

Robert Candy was baptised 24th October 1779 at St Mary's Church, Puddletown, Dorset.(Puddletown is sometimes listed as Piddletown after the river Piddle). His first marriage was to an Amy Cordey on 24th Sept 1802 at the Parish Church of St Nicholas, Bristol (from parish records). I can find no record of her death. On 10th July 1804 he married Mary Houston at St John The Baptist Church, Frome , Somerset. Details from the parish records.... 10th July 1804 St John the Baptist Church, Frome. From "The Salisbury and Winchester Journal" (British Newspapers online 1710-1950 from Find my past) Monday 22nd March 1824- On the 15inst died at Frome , Mr Robert Candy, Linen Draper, his death was awfully sudden, he had just dined when he was seized with a cough which caused the bursting of a blood vessel and in a few minutes he was a corpse. Leaving a widow and large family to lament the irreparable loss of an excellent husband and parent,
