Sidney Stephen Cannell was born on 5 Feb 1916, at Woodville, South Australia to Stephen James Milton Cannell (1884-1954) and Mary Ann (King) Cannell (1889-1967). ^{[1] [2]}

During World War Two, Sidney enlisted for service in the Citizen Military Force from 18 Aug 1942 to 11 Oct 1942, and then transferred to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 12 Oct 1942. At discharge on 15 Dec 1949, he attained the rank of "Warrant Officer Class 2" in NFT Canteens, same as British Commonwealth Occupation Forces (B.C.O.F) Amenities Unit. ^{[3] [4]}

Sometime before Sidney's enlistment in 1942, Sidney married Eileen Rena Jackson, daughter of George Oscar Jackson & Annie Olive (Adcock) Jackson.

In 1949, Eileen, then of Esplanade, Grange, filed for divorce against Sidney "for desertion". ^[5] Eileen died on 21 Oct 1965 at Willunga, South Australia.

Sidney's second marriage was to Irizawa FUKIKO in about 1948, and they had three children together in Japan:^[2]
