Mary was born in 1837. She was the daughter of John Cannon and Elizabeth Denton.
She passed away in 1915 and is buried in Graves Cemetery, just outside Delaware' Arkansas. She shares a headstone with her husband. On her side of the headstone is engraved the Cherokee Nation emblem.
A copy of the Original Application for Choctaw Citizenhip in 1896, provided by descendant Rich Cannon, is attached as a PDF to the WikiTree profiles of those mentioned in the application. [Link] Mary A. Wood (not a claimant) submitted an affidavit for the Choctaw Citizenship application. This application was overturned. Ancestry.com. Mary A. (Cannon) Wood signed a handwritten affidavit that is attached to this overturned application. (Transcription is below.) She was not an applicant for Choctaw Citizenship herself, even though her sibling Newton C. Cannon was.
The affidavit doesn’t reveal her biological relationship to Newton C. Cannon though her death certificate [Link] says they had the same parents. Perhaps she was adopted? Not known how this relates to the Cherokee emblem embedded in her headstone many years later, but since the marker in Grave Cemetery was provided by family in 1986[1] they might have additional information to support her Cherokee heritage.
