Biography

1776 Project
Reverend Ellis Cannon served with 3rd South Carolina Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Ellis Cannon was born in 1748, the son of John Cannon Sr. and Sarah Hammett Broderick, daughter of William Hammett and Margaret Underwood. Ellis Cannon and the Reverend Charles Smith migrated from Virginia about l770 and settled on land extending from the present site of Cowpens to the Pacolet River. [1]

Ellis Cannon married Elizabeth Coleman.[2] He pronounced her name Ailsabeth.[3]

Ellis was the preacher at Cannon's Campground United Methodist Church in Cowpens, South Carolina during the late 1700's. He donated the land where Cannon's Campground Methodist Church was located.[4]

Ellis was the grandfather of the Hon. Gabriel Cannon. From 1842 to 1846, and from 1866 to 1870 Colonel Gabriel Cannon was a representative from Spartanburg in the House of Representatives. From 1846 to 1862, and from 1876 to 1880 he represented the same county in the State Senate. During the administration of Governor R. F. W. Alston, he was the lieutenant-governor of South Carolina.[5]

Ellis died 20 Mar 1833 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He was buried at Cannon's Camp Ground in Spartanburg, South Carolina [6]

Rev. War, 3rd Regt., Company commanded by Captain Scott; enlisted 19 March 1781, served until discharged 17th day of September 1782.

From an 1835 report of pensioners in SC: ELLIS CANNON SPARTANBURGH DISTRICT PRIVATE VIRGINIA CONTINENTAL LINE $96.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $251.89 AMOUNT RECEIVED FEBRUARY 18, 1830 PENSION STARTED AGE 86 DIED MARCH 20, 1833

Occupation: I am a farmer by occupation but am so worn down by age infirmity that I am utterly unable to gain a subsistence. [src. Rev. War pension appl.]
