Biography

  • Jeremiah married Elizabeth (perhaps Elam). They had the following children; William (abt 1752-abt 1785), Thomas (abt 1753-abt 1841), Frances "Fanny" Cannon Walker (abt 1754-?), Benjamin ( abt 1755-?). They also might have had children named Zachariah & Jesse.
  • Jeremiah's will was (dated or proved) 16 June 1767.

I Jeremiah Cannon of Goochland County in the Colony of Virginia being in perfect Sinces and sound memory do therefore make this my Last Will and Testament in Manner and form following To Wit:

Item: I lend unto my Loveing wife Elizabeth the Land I now live on Dureing her natural Life or Widdowhood Also nine head of Cattle with all the risidue of my Stock and also all my household Stuff and furniture of what kind soever it be to her Dureing her natural life or widowhood to raise my Children upon Also I Lend her one black horse Dureing her Life or Widdowhood.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my Son William Cannon the Land I now live on Containing by Estamation Seventy Acres more or Less to him and his heirs forever after mine and my Wifes Decease and if my Son William Cannon Should die without an heir Lawfully begotten of his body then to fall to my Son Thomas Cannon his heirs &c forever;
Item: I will that one Sorrel horse that is now in Possession to be Sold to Dischare my Debts.
Item: I will that all my Estate as well Real and Personal after mine and my wifes Decease to be Equally Divided amongst all my Children. Item: I do ordain and Appoint my Loveing wife Elizabeth Executrix and my Son Benjamine Cannon Executor of this my Last Will and Testament and I do Revoke all other wills by me heretofore made Acknowledgeing this to be my Last will & Testament __ Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand & afixt my Seal this first Day of February one Thousand Seven hundred & Sixty Seven.

My note: there is no signature just a large X where Jeremiah Cannon's signature or at least the note his mark should appear. There is a drawing of the seal. And Philip Walker's "P" was noted as his mark.

Jeremiah was born in 1711. Jeremiah Cannon ... He passed away in 1767.

Cannon-2700 and Cannon-2683 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles represent the same Jeremiah Cannon per attached parents, wife named, etc.

This comment is addressed to all profile managers: As you can see I have just posted the full text of Jeremiah Cannon's will.

It highlights the fact that Jeremiah had two additional sons -- Benjamin and Thomas. In fact, he appointed Benjamin to act with his wife, Elizabeth as executors of his will.

You will also notice that his will does not mention a daughter. I would not expect him to mention her by name given the prevalent attitudes toward females during that period. However, I would expect him to mention that he had a daughter and make provision for her in the event she remained unmarried.
