Biography
Alton was born in 1812. Though census records give a birth state of Tennessee, some have suggested that Alton was born in Pendleton District, South Carolina. Alton Cannon was the son of James Alton Cannon and Mary Margaret Powell. He married Margaret Price in approximately 1833-1834. In 1840, Alton is enumerated on the federal census in Walker County, Alabama. [1] In 1850 he was enumerated on the federal census in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, [2], and in 1860 in Calhoun County, Mississippi. [3] He passed away after 1860 and before 1870. It is suspected that he is buried in the "Cannon Homestead Cemetery" where other family members are buried, though there is no marked grave. [4]
All documents referenced here refer only to "Alton Cannon" and do not indicate a first or middle name of James, or initial J.
