Jackson was born in 1830 according to the 1860 census, 1827 according to the 1880 census, and 1825 according to the 1900 census, but his grave lists his birth year as 1823. According to his grave marker, Jackson died in 1906. His birthplace is repeatedly given as Alabama. Information gleaned from a later census from his son, John Cannon confirms that his birthplace was "Alabamma."
Jackson fathered six children before he married Phoeby Pate in 1860. It is entirely possible that he had a third wife. Or that Phoeby was the biological mother prior to her official union with Jackson. According to census information, he was 30 and she was 27 at the time of their marriage. He apparently divorced Phoeby and then married Mollie Lindsy aka Lyndsey in 1876 in Suwannee County, Florida, years before Phoebe died. [1]
The family was living in Lafayette County, Florida in the 1860 Census.[2] Household members include:
Jackson Cannon, 30y/o, bp - Alabama, Married within the year.
Phebe Cannon, 27y/o, bp - Georgia, Married within the year.
As mentioned, Jackson is the father of six children whose biological mother is unknown or which he did not marry.
The birth dates of the following children would eliminate Mollie AND "Phebe" as the biological mothers:
Mary M. Cannon, born 1845
Henry J. Cannon, born 1847
James A. Cannon, born 1849
Susan Ann Cannon, born 1850
William T. Cannon, born 1852
Catherine Cannon, born 1855
The exception is John, whose mother could have been Phoeby since she and Jackson were "Married within the year" per the 1860 census. John was born in 1860.
Twenty year later, the family was still living in Suwannee County, Florida.[4]
By the 1880 Census Jackson and Mollie had been married four years, had a child (Jackson), and most of their older children had left the home. However, they didn't go far. The following Cannon families are living next to each other:
John Cannon, 21y/o, bp - Florida (Jackson's son from 1860 Census)
Susan Ann Cannon, 27y/o, bp - Florida (Jackson's daughter from 1860 Census)
Mamie Cannon, 8 y/o, bp - Florida
Henry J. Cannon, 31y/o, bp - Alabama (Jackson's son from 1860 Census)
Luvina Cannon, wife, 30y/o, bp - Georgia
Casibianca Cannon, son, 1 y/o, bp - bp - Florida
Celesta Cannon, sister, 13 y/o, bp - Florida
In the 1900 Census, the Cannons were living in Rocky Sink, Suwannee, Florida. [5]
Jackson passed away in 1906. He was laid to rest at the Old Columbus Cemetery in Live Oak, Florida. [6] A large double gravestone was added sometime later. The inscription reads as follows:
MOTHER AND FATHER
MOLLIE CANNON
Born 1843
Died 1890
JACKSON CANNON
Born 1823
Died 1906
Biblical scripture underneath.
Mollie's date of death on the headstone of 1890 appears inaccurate as she was receiving Jackson's pension benefits up until 1920. [7]
Jackson and Phoebe were mentioned in the death record of their daughter Catherine in 1938. [8]
