Biography

Dick Powell Canoy was born on Feb 21, 1935 in Simpson County, Mississippi, USA as the fifth child of Timothy Franklin Canoy and Lola Belle Bishop. He had eight siblings, namely: Flora Beatrice, Sadie Pearl, Mellie Jean, Cody Mitchel, Thomas Leon Sr, Joanna, Timmie Tyrone, and Travis Eugene.

He died on Feb 05, 2003 in Brandon, Rankin, Mississippi, USA (at home; Age at Death: 67).

When he was 24, he married Glenda Lee King on Jun 12, 1959.

Obituary

Dick Canoy, 67, died February 5, 2003 at his Brandon residence.

Funeral services were held February 8, 2003 at Meadow Grove Baptist Church in Brandon with burial in Lakewood Cemetery in Jackson. The Reverends Steve Wilson, Travis Canoy and Ricky Kennedy officiated. Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon handled arrangements.

Mr. Canoy was a native of Simpson County and a longtime resident of Hinds and Rankin counties. He was a member of Meadow Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Canoy was a graduate of Magee High School, Co-Lin Junior College and Mississippi College with B.S. and M.E. degrees. He had previously been associated with the school industry through coaching and administration. He had served at Sebastopol Attendance Center as coach and biology teacher and later as principal, and at Edinburg Attendance Center and Carthage High School as coach and biology teacher. He later served as headmaster at MS Baptist High School and coached at Manhattan High School and University Christian Academy. His honors related to teaching included STAR teacher, Coach of the Year in the Big Black Conference, and president of the Cherokee Conference. Mr. Canoy later became associated with Alfa Insurance, with his agency located in Brandon. He received numerous awards with Alfa and retired in 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Canoy of Brandon; sons, Randy Canoy and wife Tamra of Iowa, Michael Canoy and wife Cynthia of Terry, Marcus Canoy and wife Whitney of Brandon; sisters, Beatrice Kennedy, Sadie Thornton and Joanna Barnes of Magee and Jean Hopkins of Star; brothers, Leon Canoy of Crystal Springs and Travis Canoy of Magee; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Timothy Canoy, Kyle Canoy, Al Shams, Jerry Powers, Gary Johnston and Nelson Hayman. Honorary pallbearers were the Adult Men's Sunday School Class at Meadow Grove Baptist Church.
