Captain James Cantey was the son of John Cantey and Mary McGirt. [1]
He served as a lieutenant under Colonel Richardson in the Snow Campaign of November 1775 and in Colonel Thompson's Regiment of Rangers in the Continental Army. Also Gen Francis Marion. [2]
James married Martha Whitaker in 1785 in Fairfield District, SC.
In 1798, James sold his land in Camden, SC, and with kinsmen Hudson Whitaker and Francis Boykin moved to Georgia where they established homes on the Oconee River near where Town and Gum Creeks empty into the river in the southeastern part of Baldwin County (was Washington County). They lived about 14 miles southeast of Milledgeville, Georgia.
