Biography

[[Category The Cantrell Family Project

Descendant of William Cantrell, the first Cantrell in North America. William arrived from England with Captain John Smith in Jamestown, Virginia on April 20, 1607.

Thomas was born on 26 January 1761 in Orange County, North Carolina. He is the son of John Cantrell and Rachel Brittain. He passed away in September 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee and is buried in Williamsburg Cemetery, McMinn County.[1]

Birth

There is a question as to his birth location. He is said to have been born in New Castle County, Pennsylvania (now Delaware) or in Orange County, North Carolina. His father John Cantrell was listed on the tax lists in North Carolina for 1752 and in Orange County, North Carolina for 1753 and 1754. In 1790 his father was in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Orange County, North Carolina is the most logical place of birth based on this information.

Marriage

Thomas married Elizabeth Norris about 1780, possibly in North Carolina. A marriage record has not yet been found. After their marriage they first settled in Greenville District, South Carolina[2] and later moved to Tennessee where they settled on Sink Creek in Warren County[3] (later DeKalb County).[4]

Military

Thomas served during the Revolutionary War as a member of Lieut. Col. Lytle's Command, Caswell County, North Carolina. His name has been found on a list, not dated, of men "enrolled for Capt. Robert Moore, from Caswell County."[5]

The following information comes from Ancestry.com. Unsure if this is the same Thomas. (MGP notes 1-1-1999):
