Biography

James was born about 1767 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He was the son of Isaac Cantrell and Nancy Cloud. He passed away in 1838 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He is purportedly buried in Williams Cemetery #1, Spartanburg, Spartanburg County. There does not appear to be a marked gravestone.[1]

James married Margaret Saunders about 1788 in Rockingham County. Very shortly after that they relocated to Spartanburg County, South Carolina. James appears on all the census records from 1790 through 1830.

In 1790 he is listed with himself, his wife and one son under age 16 in his household. Also listed on that census in the same area are John, Abraham and Benjamin Cantrell and Bethel Sampson, husband of his sister Mary.[2]

James remained in Spartanburg County until his death in 1838.
