"Georgia was a Cherokee Indian, a midwife, and a Baptist. Her husband spelled his last name at that time as Wilburn (later he changed the spelling to Welborn when he moved to SC after Georgia died). Georgia is sometimes listed as "Georgianna" or "Georgia Annah." She is buried with only a rock as a marker near a tree in the church cemetery near some Runyon graves. She had the following children: Albert, Halston, Robert, Thomas, and Ada." [1]
Georgia was born in 1852. She passed away about 1902. She was Cherokee. She was a midwife and "the praying-est Indian you ever saw." She is buried in the Blue Heights Baptist Church Cemetery in Clayton, GA. There may be been a rock at one time marking her burial site near a tree in the cemetery. I could not locate it when I visited circa 1995.
Her name does not appear on any official Cherokee roster/census. My theory is that her parents were full-blooded Cherokees that avoided President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal. If this is the case, of course, there would be no official records of her. Her husband George Wiley Welborn of Georgia was white. I have a photocopy of their marriage license. After Georgia's death, George Welborn remarried Roxanna Queen. The older children of Georgia (including my great-grandfather Albert Welborn) came to Upstate SC to make their lives.

The research notes on this profile detail the why of hernot appearing on official documentation. No, there is no documentation and she claimed to be white on any Census records. It is family lore, of course.
Be interesting to find something more and or get one of her direct descendants to DNA test to verify the possibility she was not what she claimed and attempted to hide.
