Biography

James Cantrell Birth 18 Aug 1757 in Orange, North Carolina, United States Death 17 Oct 1825 in Buck Creek, Spartanburg, South Carolina, United States [1]

1790 census, Pendleton District, South Carolina, includes a listing for James Cantrell with 2 males age 16 and over, 4 males under age 16 and 3 females. Also nearby on the list is Stephen Cantrell, possibly James' brother.[2]

In 1800 James is still living in Pendleton District, South Carolina. In the household are:

  • 1 male under age 10
  • 1 male age 10-15
  • 1 male age 16-25
  • 1 male age 45 and over [James]
  • 1 female age 10-15
  • 1 female age 45 and over [wife, Elizabeth][3]

There is a James Cantrell in Spartanburg County, South Carolina on the 1810 census, however he is too young to be this James.

Have not been able to locate James with certainty on 1810 or 1820 census.

Marriage

James married Elizabeth in South Carolina about 1777. She is said by some to have been Elizabeth Harris, but this could not be confirmed definitely. A complete list of their children has not been compiled, but it is known he had a son Thomas.

Military

James served in the War of 1812 in Nash's Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers as a Private.[4][5][6]

Burial

Buck Creek Baptist Church, Spartanburg Co., SC

The dates for this James Cantrell are commonly used for John Cantrell Jr. aka Miller John. Generally his date of death is listed as 17 Oct 1825. However, it's been updated to 1823. Also, the date of births 1751 or 18 Aug 1757 are used for both men. See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cantrell-89

Additionally, Could the 1838 LWT of James Cantrell in Spartanburg be for the son of John Sr? https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/9080/images/007642209_00264?pId=1106103

Cantrell-485 and Cantrell-84 appear to represent the same person because: same birthdate & place: same parents, both married to Elizabeth Harris.
