.....Captain Capel in his youth joined the Royal Navy, and we believe saw some service, but resigned when quite a young man and came to New Zealand at the time of the Otago goldfields outbreak. After a trip Home he again came out to New Zealand, and joined the Armed Constabulary Force, in which he served for many years. At Poverty Bay, Waikato, the White Cliffs, Waihi, Auckland, and more recently at Opunake, he held commands. Since resigning from the force about 10 or 15 years ago he has lived in New Plymouth.....[7]
