Biography

Early Life

Sir Edward Capell, Esq. of Hadham Hall, was born circa 1505[1] in Aspenden, Hertfordshire, England. His parents were Sir Giles Capell, Knt. of Hadham Hall, born circa 1475, died 29 May 1556, and Lady Isabel Newton, of Wake, Somerset, born circa 1485. Sir Edward had two older siblings:

  1. Margaret (Capell) Ward, born circa 1504, died 19 May 1577, about 73 years old
  2. Sir Henry Capell, Esq. of Hadham Hall, born 25 October 1505, died 1 February 1558, about 53 years old.

The Capell or Capel family were members of the Suffolk gentry, seated in Capel St Mary, a village in Suffolk, since the 12th century[2]. During the reign Henry VII, Sir Edward’s grandfather, Sir William Capell, Lord Mayor of London, bought the manor of Hadham, near Bishop’s Stortford, and Hadham Hall became the family’s chief seat.[3]

The Capel coat of arms contains Gules, a lion rampant between three cross crosslets fitchee.[4]

Sir Edward's father, Sir Giles, died 29 May 1556, leaving the family estates to the eldest son, Sir Henry. Sir Henry died 1 February 1558, without issue, leaving the family estates to his brother, Sir Edward.

Family

Sir Edward married Anne Pelham, daughter of Sir William Pelham and Lady Mary Carew circa 1536 in England and they had six children:[5]

  1. Sir Henry Capell, Esq., Sheriff of Essex & Hertfordshire, born before 1537,[6] died 22 June 1588, about 48 years old, married Katherin Manners and Mary Browne.
  2. Gyles Capell
  3. Anne Capell, married Ralfe Hyde
  4. Mary Capell, married Weston Browne
  5. Elizabeth (Capell) Wentworth, born circa 1540, married John Wentworth
  6. Grace Capell, married John Burton[7]

Occupation

Sir Edward's father, Sir Giles Capell, stated in his Will that his executors were to ensure that both Henry and his younger brother, Edward studied law.[3]

Sir Edward was made Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire on 12 November 1560.[8]

In the "County Genealogies of Hertfordshire", Sir Edward is recorded as being Knighted and made Sheriff in 1560.[8] In "The Knights of England", by Shaw, Sir Edward is recorded as being made a Knights Bachelor after 12 November 1560.[9]

By 1563 Sir Edward, as the head of the family, was one of the leading gentry in Hertfordshire.[3]

Death & Legacy

Sir Edward died on May 1577 in England about 72 years old.[1] Probate was on 11 May 1577.[10] He was buried in Aspeden (now Aspenden), Hertfordshire, England.[8]
