Rule

He received Artois as an appanage, in accordance with the will of his father (died 1226) on attaining his majority in 1237 (aged twenty-one). In 1240 Pope Gregory IX, in conflict with the Emperor Frederick II, offered to crown Robert as emperor in opposition to Frederick, but the French count refuse to pretend to such a title. [1]
Robert was Count of Artois from 1237 to 1250.

Marriage

On 14 June 1237 (by papal dispensation dated 19 Jan 1237, they being related in the 4th degree of kindred), Robert married Mahaut (or Mathilde), daughter of Henry II, Duke of Brabant and Lorraine, by Marie, daughter and co-heiress of Philip I, King of Germany.[2][1].[3]

Children

They had two children:[1]

  • Blanche of Artois (1248–1302)
  • Robert II of Artois (1250–1302), who succeeded to Artois after Robert I was killed in Egypt during the Seventh Crusade, led by his brother Louis IX of France.

Death

"Robert died while leading a reckless attack on Al Mansurah, without the knowledge of his brother King Louis IX. He and the Templars accompanying the expedition charged into the town and became trapped in the narrow streets. According to Jean de Joinville, he defended himself for some time in a house there, but was at last overpowered and killed. In Egypt it is believed that Sultan Qutuz killed him, although it is more likely that an anonymous soldier did so. According to Matthew Paris who is not considered reliable by modern historians, he fled in disgrace at the height of the battle, and drowned while trying to cross a river named Thanis (a branch of the Nile)."[1]

What is the source for 6 Sep 1216 as his birth date? Wikipedia, which is quoted in the bio, gives 25 Sep 1216. Then right after the 6 Sep date is given, contradicting it, but not footnoted.

A book I own, Les Capetiens by Patrick van Kerrebrouck, just has his birth as September 1216, but without citing a source or sources. Charles Cawley in his Medieval Lands, also has September 1216 but again without citing a source https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/NORTHERN%20FRANCE.htm#RobertIArtoisdied1250B

The English and French Wikipedia articles also don't cite any sources for the birth date of 25 September, and the German Wikipedia article has probably 17 September but again no source. Looks like Douglas Richardson covers him in one of his books, perhaps there is a source in that>

Otherwise it might need further research.

Certainly warrants a review and some type of annotation. Especially with conflicting (or the absence of definite) dates floating around. I only noticed it because of my ancestor birthday database, which had the 25th.

Richardson shows his birth (in Royal Ancestry, Vol. I, p 143) as "(17) Sept 1216". I'm not sure why the day is in parentheses -- maybe because he isn't positive? I've changed the DOB to just the month/year.

UNKNOWN-55007 and Capet-662 appear to represent the same person because: The unknown profile is Robert I comte d'Artois, husband of Mahaut/Mathilde, and father of Blanche d'Artois = same as Capet-662
Royal Ancestry, D. Richardson Vol. I p. 143 and Vol. III p. 27
Robert Of France, Count of Artois, (Capet-671), (1216-1268) married Mahaut (or Mathilde) Of Brabant.
Maud (Brabant) d'Artois - (Brabant-13) (1224-1228)
Matilda (Leuven) Artois - (Leuven-24)
Robert (Capet) d'Artois - (Capet-671) (1216-1248)
Robert (Capet) Artois - (Capet-662)

Request: Would someone please help with a merge for both Maud Brabant and Robert Capet and the LNAB d'Artois needs an edit.

Thank you very much for your help!  :-)

Hi Jerry, have you checked this profile recently if this person is 200 years old or more then the privacy option needs changing to white, and there are merges pending for you to look at

from yet another cousin :)
