Gia Carangi was an American model. She is considered by some to be the first supermodel.
Born in Philadelphia to Joseph and Kathleen (Adams) Carangi. She had two older brothers.
Carangi attended Abraham Lincoln High School.
At the age of 17 she moved to New York and signed with Wilhelmina Models.
She was active from 1978-1983, appearing on the cover of Vogue and Cosmopolitan.
She appeared in advertising campaigns for many leading fashion houses and cosmetic firms including Armani, Dio, Max Factor and Maybelline.
After struggling with heroin addiction Carangi contracted HIV and died of AIDS-related complication aged just 26.
